Agricultural Magnet


OVERVIEW

Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet is located in the West San Fernando Valley and in the Northwestern end of the Los Angeles Unified School District boundaries. The Magnet program was established in 1996 and has a capacity of 268. Our students enjoy a comprehensive 9th through 12th grade program catering to students interested in an agricultural and/or veterinary related science major and career. It offers a challenging educational setting combining an inclusive high school education and a hands-on program with unique on-site features; 1.5 acre farm holding several livestock animals, productive organic farming area, landscaping plots, and plant identification area. It seeks to assist in achievement its under-represented minority students while undertaking a rigorous academic schedule.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

The Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet aims to promote career paths in the agricultural and or veterinary science fields, and to meet the vocational need in the related field.

The Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet program aims to:
  • Prepare students for opportunities in post-secondary educational institutes
  • Improve academic achievement in science related fields amongst under-represented minority students and/or from low socio-economic communities
  • Provide a positive educational setting, which acknowledges student accomplishments, promoting self-esteem, while exposing students to diverse cultures to encourage mutual respect
  • Present students with a multitude of facets related to agricultural, environmental and veterinary science in all academic disciplines
  • Increase access to technology in fields related to agriculture, environmental and veterinary sciences
DIFFERENTIATED OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

By accepting a challenging curriculum, an appropriate academic schedule, counseling by the appropriate staff, each student will discover his/her potential. All schedules, teaching methods, distributed materials are appropriate for the wide scale of achievement levels.

English
  • To develop each student's writing and reading skills to support a high level of interdisciplinary achievement, and expose students to related scientific themes through literature.
Social Studies
  • To expand critical thinking skills; when presented with any related scientific issues, the student will have the tools to explain, written or verbally, the topic within an educated forum and correlate them to society as a whole, whether the related scientific theme is conversational or controversial.
Mathematics
  • The student will have a comprehension of the logic and theories of mathematical concept and to apply them to day-to-day life and post-secondary institutional settings in the related scientific fields.
Science
  • To ensue a challenging scientific schedule in preparation for a post-secondary institution, to have a full comprehension of all science based principals and concepts presented to the individual student and the relationship to agricultural and veterinary science.
Foreign Language
  • To expand the cultural exposure to the individual student, the student will comprehend the grammatical and conversational concepts of the selected foreign language. The student will understand the significance of the related scientific areas to the selected culture and its people.
Agricultural/Veterinary Science
  • The student will study in an interactive environment on our 1.5-acre farm to better comprehend the concepts and theories related to both agricultural and veterinary science. The farm area allows the student to view the concepts and theories to be applied to tangible matter and to view the multi-faceted field of agricultural and veterinary science.
To assist all students with post secondary institution selection and career planning, both administrative and counseling staff strongly urges all students to have informative meetings with our on-site College Counselor during their high school career at Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE

Students are expected to have an interest in Agriculture, Environmental, and/or Veterinary Science. Students should be planning to continue these interests in college and ensue a similar career. Students attending the Magnet Program should have a desire to work with plants and/or animals independently and or within a group setting. Students in the Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet will be encouraged to enroll in courses that meet the University of California "A-G" requirements, but programs will be adjusted to meet the needs of each individual student. All Magnet students will be enrolled in an Agriculture, Environmental, and/or Veterinary Science related class each semester. Students may be expected to attend summer school in order to complete graduation requirements that cannot to be completed during the regular school year.

All students will comply with Los Angeles Unified School District graduation requirements including passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

The Future Farmers of America (a national recognized student organization that promotes student leadership and public speaking skills) is an integral part of the Magnet School and all students are encouraged to participate.

SPECIAL CURRICULUM

Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Science are reflected throughout the curriculum in each respective discipline.

English
  • Covering state standards; literature and research projects related to the specific sciences; hypothetical letter to the editor concerning a controversial animal/environmental issue; reading selections such as Animal Farm and Hiroshima to encompass the program theme; classroom access to multimedia programs and internet access, MLA writing methods, technical format and skills to accomplish the assigned tasks.
Social Studies
  • Covering state standards; covering the origin of man, classical thinking and historical development through the modern era with agriculture, environmental and veterinary related issues; covering the creation of the American Republic and its historical development along with agriculture, environmental and veterinary related issues; incorporate into the magnet curriculum with extensive research and project based assignments requiring computer technology and proficiency; interpersonal communication skills, and community networking abilities.
Foreign Language
  • Covering state standards; develop phonic skills and conversational etiquette to create brief presentations through out the school year on topics across the curriculum, communicate through written works in the applied language on related scientific topics; assignments involve the use of electronic technology such as audio cd's, video/DVD's, interactive computer software to support themes.
Mathematics
  • Covering state standards; relate mathematical concepts to agricultural, environmental and veterinary science; utilize graphs, mathematical equations, precise measurements and calculations to develop a magnet project and enhance cross-curricular topics.
Science
  • Covering state standards; present students with lab activities that incorporate agriculture, environmental, veterinary sciences; during ¾ of the school year, instructor will supervise a student run business incorporating agriculture and environmental science. Study units on California agriculture and its effects on the environmental and veterinary sects, students receive information on veterinary and agricultural issues and given assignments accordingly.
Los Angeles Pierce College
  • Canoga Park Agricultural/Environmental/Veterinary Science Magnet encourages all students to enroll and complete college courses offered by Los Angeles Pierce College on our campus related to agricultural and veterinary sciences. In previous occasions, Avian Husbandry, First Aid for Domestic Animals, Marine Biology, Orientation to Veterinary Science, and Organic Gardening have been offered. Magnet Counselor approval prior to registration must be obtained.
Digital High School
  • The Canoga Park High School campus has broadband digital cables laid out for quick and efficient access to the internet allowing our student up to date information on all issues affecting agricultural and veterinary science. The campus has 4 computer labs available for student use, in addition to 4 portable carts containing class sets of laptops with Wi-Fi wiring.
In addition to the daily curriculum, all students are required to submit an individual Fall Magnet Grade Level project and a group Spring Magnet Grade Level project. Topics and subject matters of the semester projects vary per school year. All projects are required to be submitted on multimedia format.
