Avid
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college bound program directed to the "C", "B" and "A" student who needs the academic support in the challenging classes required to qualify for state colleges, UC’s or private universities. Tutoring is provided twice a week during class with university tutors. AVID also provides college/university field trips and cultural exposure. The program teaches and incorporates the skills necessary (organization, time management, Cornell notes, etc.) to be successful in school or college.
Freshman Center
Canoga Park High School will open a Freshmen Center September 2005. The goal of this personalized center will be to help our freshman promote to the tenth grade with academic success and their own personal goals for the future. We will be implementing strategies to ensure success: tutorial help during the regular school day, after school study hall, college field trips, exposure to the various small learning communities on our campus, personalized assemblies, our own Parent Center and much more!
School for Advanced Studies
This program offers nineteen Advanced Placement classes and sixteen honors classes. These courses are in: Art, English, Math, Music, Science, Spanish and Social Studies. Differentiated strategies begin with alignment to the Standards and Advanced Placement criteria, which in turn are directly tied in with standardized assessments. Many of the projects students must produce are using Power Point presentations, video movie making, computerized portfolios, and desktop publishing.
Humanities
The Humanities Program is a challenging, interdisciplinary approach to learning; in which student make connections between literature, history, art and science. Teachers work together and share ideas, curriculum, and assignments. For three hours a day students will discuss the same ideas and look at them from different perspectives in each of their core Humanities class. (Available in 10th, 11th and 12th grade.)
**Students will be scheduled with designated teachers in English and at least one other core academic subject as well as the interest elective. Teachers will collaborate to develop related lesson and interdisciplinary projects.
