English 12 (Expository Comp. / English Literature) (Section 1)

Course Description: The goals of this course are to increase the students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Every activity in the class addresses at least one of these goals. The year will begin with an emphasis on reading expository text and responding critically in well-organized essays. In the first semester, students will also be writing a 3-5 page research paper in MLA format and composing personal statements in response to questions written by the University of California. In the spring semester, the students will be reading a variety of plays, novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as completing CPHS's senior portfolio requirements. Work will be done individually and in small groups. Each student's responsibility for completing work and meeting deadlines is critical in their senior year.

Required Supplies:
1. Students will be supplied with a three-ring binder with paper and dividers, a spiral notebook, a pencil, and a pen for use in class (these must be replaced if lost by the student.)
2. Students should also have their own notebook or folder in which to do and transport homework assignments neatly.
3. CPHS Agenda Book
4. A Public Library card that will be utilized for the term paper

Work Requirements:
1. All assigned work must be completed and turned in on time.
2. One day late is worth 50%, two days late receives no credit.
3. If a student is absent, it is his/her own responsibility to obtain make-up work
4. Completion of the research paper and senior portfolio are required to pass the course
5. Following the guidelines in the writer's handbook portion of the agenda book, writing assignments are to be done in ink on notebook paper (writing on the back side of the paper is unacceptable.) Papers must include the appropriate header:

Work Habits grade will be determined by:
1. Consistent effort and attention
2. Having required supplies daily and following class routine, including going to work immediately
3. Maintaining good attendance, avoiding unnecessary absences and tardiness
4. Careful proofreading and willingness to revise work

Cooperation grade will be determined by:
1. Consistently maintaining courteous relations with others
2. Respecting school rules including no food or electronic equipment visible in the classroom
3. Reading quietly in class when asked
4. Respecting others' right to learn
5. Your willingness to learn

Academic Grades:
Calculated by percentage of total possible points earned
100%-90% = A 89%-80% = B 79%-70% = C
69%-60% = D 59% and below is a fail

Class Rules:
1. Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings
2. Respect others
3. Use appropriate language at appropriate volume
4. Have your supplies
5. Stay on task, participating in all class activities
6. Stay in your seat until dismissed by the teacher
7. Follow the school rules of Canoga Park High School
Failure to follow the rules will result in loss of points and appropriate disciplinary action

This will be a productive and memorable year for the students. We will also be working to make it a successful one.
