Dear Parent/Guardian:

The English department wants to let you know that over the course of the year some of the literature the students will be reading contains some mature subject matter. All of our selections have been approved by the California State Department of Education at the grade levels where they are currently taught. All of the selections have been approved by Los Angeles Unified School District as well. All of our selections are taught widely and are recognized for their literary merit.

The most frequently taught selections in the ninth grade include: The Odyssey, Night, The Chocolate War, Romeo and Juliet, Z for Zachariah, and Enders Game. The most frequently taught selections in the tenth grade include: Like Water for Chocolate, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451and A Tale of Two Cities. The most frequently taught selections in the eleventh grade include: The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn, and Catcher in the Rye. The most frequently taught selections in the twelfth grade include: Macbeth, Hamlet, 1984, A Brave New World, Jane Eyre, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Canterbury Tales, A Doll's House and Siddhartha.

We recognize that parents have the right to decide what is suitable for their children to read. Therefore, if you have any concerns regarding the reading, please feel free to contact your student's teacher for accommodations for your child.
