NORDSTROM GRANTS $10,000

Congratulations Cynthia Ubilla – 2008 Nordstrom Scholarship Award Recipient

September 16, 2008

Ms. Romero’s Spanish class was completely silent aside from the sound coming from the overhead projector. This was because Ms. Rosso dropped in as a sudden visitor to class, causing curiosity of why she was there. Mrs. Hamashita, a cameraman, and a few other mysterious people loomed around. They were supposedly filming a “documentary.” The truth was finally revealed when they announced that Cynthia Ubilla was awarded the $10,000 Nordstrom Scholarship.

It was obvious that Cynthia was overwhelmed by the surprise. “I was like one of those people in reality TV shows,” she says. In addition to the unexpected, her parents came inside as well. They congratulated and embraced her while her classmates applauded her achievement. Once all was calm and Cynthia was able to take in what just happened, her group of important visitors led her outside. The camera continued to follow and capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Cynthia definitely deserved this scholarship based on what she had to do to get it. The application process ran from January to March of 2008. Cynthia was endlessly supported by Ms. Rosso and her parents throughout those months. She had to write an essay about how college will change her life and turn in her personal statement and a letter of recommendation. Because of her outstanding work, she was picked as one of the top 11 out of 450 applicants. Along with the challenging tasks that she had already done, she had to be interviewed by a table of intimidating people. She did admit that she was really nervous during the interview. Of course, her nerves didn’t get the best of her since she is now one of the 5 scholarship award recipients.

Cynthia would like to thank those without whom she wouldn’t have gotten this award. First are her parents, who continuously supported her. Second are her counselors, Ms. Rosso and Ms. Resnick. Third are her friends, who are there to celebrate with her. Last but not the least is God, who gives her blessings such as this.
Last year, a student from Canoga Park High School, Clyde Villacisneros, won this scholarship. This year, Cynthia Ubilla did. Maybe next year, another proud Hunter will receive the 2009 Nordstrom Scholarship.
