INTRODUCING COACH SMITH!
We would like to introduce Coach Jim Smith. Coach Smith has been a PE teacher and Coach at Canoga for almost 25 years!
Where did Coach Smith grow up?
Coach Smith grew up in the San Fernando Valley.
What high school did he attend?
He attended Birmingham High School
What activities was Coach Smith involved in when he was in high school?
He was a City Champion in baseball in 1966. He played football as well.
How does Coach Smith like working at Canoga?
Coach Smith says, “It’s the best school!” He has been working at Canoga since 1988 when he became our varsity baseball coach. He coached baseball well into the 1990’s.
What advice does the Coach have for students here at Canoga?
“They have to get good grades for life, and good grades in order to play sports. The same habits make you a good student and athlete.”
Has Coach Smith ever taught at another school?
He started substituting Special Education for 6 years. Coach Smith also taught P.E at Pacoima Junior High for 7 years.
What other jobs has he had?
Coach Smith played pro baseball for 5 years in the Minnesota Twins organization.
What does Coach do in his spare time?
In his spare time he takes care of his family and house. He also likes to snow ski.
What kind of music does he like?
Coach Smith likes to hear Rock and Roll
What is something we don’t know about Coach Smith, that he would like us to know?
“When I retire, I am going to join the Beach Boys with Mr. McGee and tour the country.”
Where did Coach Smith go to college?
He went to Pierce J.C and Cal State University, Northridge (C.S.U.N.) He was on the ski team for 2 years.
What was his major in college?
His major in college was Physical Education.
Why did Coach Smith become a baseball/softball coach?
Coach Smith says, “I’ve been playing baseball since I could walk. I started in the leagues when I was 7 years old. I retired from professional baseball in 1973 because of an injury. I played baseball for fun until 2003. I’ve always wanted to coach the sport that I love.”
