![]() ![]() ARBOR DAY 2010
A Canoga Park High School tradition was observed again last Friday as students, staff, and alumni planted two more Coastal Redwood trees in the old historic grove. Two years ago, Canoga reinstituted the old school tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day. National Arbor Day is observed every year on the last Friday of April, and this year it fell on the 30th. In the spirit of the day, two more Coastal Redwoods were planted north of the football field in our attempt to revitalize Canoga's historic Redwood Grove. Canoga Park High School is very thankful to Nancy Bergquist of Green Thumb Nursery for her generous donation of the trees. In the last two years Nancy has donated five Redwoods to the old Grove that she remembers fondly from her high school days at Canoga. Nancy is a proud Hunter from the class of 1964! Over 100 students were present for the event, including the marching band. Our honored guests were Nancy Bergquist, and Betty Allen (class of 1938). Betty was in the 10th grade at Canoga when the Redwood Grove was first planted in 1936! One tree was planted in memory of Dale Bergquist (Founder of Green Thumb Nursery and Nancy's Father) who passed away last January, and the other was planted in honor of Betty Allen who will turn 90 on May 9th! We have done much to help the Old Grove over the last 5 years, and the two newest redwoods will help us to bring the grove back to its former grandeur. Thank you Mr. McGee, Mr. Otsap, Ms. Olenick, Mr. Artinian, Mr. Morton, Mr. Moreno, Mr. Tiefen, and Ms. Hamashita for participating and bringing your students. Thank you Canoga students for carrying on a great tradition! And a very special thanks to Betty, Nancy and Green Thumb Nursery! To see picture of the event, please click here.
