English Language DevelopmentCanoga’s English
Language Development (ELD) program maximizes student potential and growth
opportunities. Foremost, the ELD curriculum assists students in achieving
spoken and written fluency in the English Language. Courses are designed to
support English Learners (ELs) as they progress towards Reclassification.
English Learners
comprise a variety of student populations: some are newcomers to the country, some are Long Term English Learners (LTELs), and some are students with
disabilities.
Canoga’s ELD program and staff nurture academic excellence, personal success, and social responsibility for
each student by providing the following services and activities to foster
student development: orientations for recent arrivals; parent informational
meetings; specialized support classes throughout the program; achievement and
award ceremonies; career fairs; parent conferences; specialized teacher training; and additional activities that facilitate the education of the whole
child. Canoga’s ELD program receives outstanding results, which have been
recognized at the district and state levels. ELD CoursesELD classes for Recent Arrivals: These courses are for English learners who are recent
arrivals to U.S. schools ( 6 years or less). These courses are what used to be called
“English as a Second Language (ESL).” ELD
classes for LTEL students: Reclassification EL
students are monitored to ensure that they achieve great success not only
expanding their language skills, but also in mastering their grade level academic coursework. Our goal for EL students is to meet the reclassification
criteria to earn the distinction of Reclassified Fluent English Proficient
(RFEP). Parent Involvement We encourage parents to be involved in school activities. Parents can join the English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC) as well as other parent committees to be updated with issues concerning English Learners and help our school make important decisions to better serve our English learning students. ELAC meets one Wednesday of the month at 8:30 am in the Parent Center
